Dollar Tree makes Creedon its permanent CEO

Following former Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling’s departure in November, the retailer named Michael C. Creedon Jr. to replace him as interim CEO. Now, Dollar Tree’s board has made Creedon’s appointment permanent.

Creedon will oversee more than 200,000 associates and 16,000 stores for the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar banners. As he takes on those responsibilities, he sees his arrival to the chief executive role occurring at a “pivotal time.”

Dollar Tree ranks No. 181 in the Top 1000 Database, Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of North America’s largest online retailers. There, Digital Commerce 360 categorizes it as a Mass Merchant retailer. Digital Commerce 360 also projects that Dollar Tree’s online sales in 2024 will reach $555.19 million.

“Following a search, we are unanimous as a Board in our belief that Mike is the right leader for Dollar Tree,” said Edward J. Kelly, III, the chairman of the board at Dollar Tree. “His deep understanding of the business, coupled with his strategic vision and collaborative leadership, has earned the trust and respect of the entire organization.”

The transition comes as Dollar Tree is wrestling with the future of Family Dollar, which it acquired in 2015. The company revealed in June that it was considering a potential sale. In the meantime, it has dealt with larger challenges in the dollar-store space for retail.

“We have full confidence in Mike’s ability to guide the enterprise to growth and success,” Kelly stated.

As CEO, Creedon will extend his time at Dollar Tree, which began in 2022 when he was hired as chief operating officer.

Creedon’s professional background

Before joining Dollar Tree, Creedon held leadership positions at Advance Auto Parts, including executive vice president and president of the brand’s U.S. stores. In addition, his résumé lists executive roles at Tyco International and ADT Security.

“It’s a privilege to lead Dollar Tree at such a pivotal time,” Creedon said. “My focus will continue to be on delivering long-term value to our associates, customers, and shareholders as a company that is rooted in strong values and operational excellence. I am thrilled and humbled to step into this leadership role as we remain focused on unlocking the enterprise’s full potential.”

Creedon, who graduated from Middlebury College with a bachelor’s degree, also holds a seat on the board of directors for the Chrysler Museum and is a trustee for Norfolk Academy.
