DHL Supply Chain acquires IDS Fulfillment to expand U.S. ecommerce

DHL Supply Chain has acquired IDS Fulfillment, a U.S.-based provider of ecommerce fulfillment and retail distribution logistics, in a move to strengthen its capabilities for small and midsized businesses (SMBs) in North America.

The deal brings more than 1.3 million square feet of multi-client warehouse and distribution space under DHL’s umbrella. IDS Fulfillment operates strategically located facilities in Indianapolis and Plainfield, Indiana; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Atlanta. The company is known for serving growing ecommerce brands and retail customers with direct-to-consumer shipping, inventory management, and value-added logistics services.

DHL fulfills deliveries for online orders from more than 190 retailers in the Top 2000 Database. Those retailers combined for more than $532 billion in 2024 ecommerce sales, Digital Commerce 360 data shows. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s rankings and more of the largest online retailers in North America based on their annual ecommerce sales.

DHL acquisition of IDS Fulfillment

IDS Fulfillment was founded in 1967 and headquartered in Plainfield, Indiana. Since then, it has evolved into a technology-driven third-party logistics provider (3PL). It specializes in order fulfillment, transportation management, and omnichannel distribution.

Its client base includes a mix of online retailers, subscription box services, and consumer product companies looking to scale operations through outsourced logistics.

“Acquiring IDS expands our footprint and enhances our ability to offer agile, scalable solutions to small and mid-sized ecommerce businesses,” said Kraig Foreman, president of ecommerce for DHL Supply Chain North America. “This is a segment that’s growing fast and demanding more flexible, tech-enabled fulfillment models.”

This acquisition is DHL’s second ecommerce-related purchase in North America this year. It signals continued investment in the region. It also follows a broader strategy to grow DHL’s presence in high-volume, high-growth sectors like ecommerce, health care, and technology.

DHL says it plans a smooth transition for IDS customers and employees. It will also integrate the company into its broader North American ecommerce and retail logistics network. The move gives DHL added capacity and geographic reach to support next-day and two-day delivery commitments for SMBs — a segment traditionally underserved by larger fulfillment providers.
