Amazon has launched Amazon Business in Australia, expanding its global B2B marketplace into a market estimated to be worth A$76 billion (US$50 billion).
The figure, cited by IbisWorld, reflects the growing size of Australia’s business-to-business ecommerce sector, driven by increased digital adoption among small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Australian rollout marks the latest step in Amazon Business’ international expansion, following launches in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada, and India. With this move, Australia becomes the 10th country to host the platform.
Amazon Business offers a procurement-focused version of the familiar Amazon marketplace, with features tailored for business buyers. These include business-only pricing, bulk purchasing discounts, multi-user accounts, invoice-based payments, and workflow approval tools.
Australia becomes 10th country using Amazon Business
The launch comes as many Australian organizations — particularly SMEs — seek to streamline purchasing processes, reduce costs, and gain better visibility into spending.
“We’re simplifying a critical aspect of operations for Australian businesses,” said Lena Zak, country manager for Amazon Business Australia.
The platform debuts ahead of the end of the Australian financial year. That period is when many companies ramp up procurement activity and finalize budgets. Amazon Business aims to support those needs with access to categories such as office supplies, IT products, and workplace essentials, supported by Amazon’s local logistics network and customer service, Amazon says.
Key features available at launch include:
- Business Prime: Offers free shipping, shared accounts, and analytics tools.
- Introductory Offer: A 30% discount (up to A$100) for new, verified business accounts through June 30.
- Bulk Pricing: Tiered discounts for high-volume purchases.
- Spending Controls: Budget enforcement and approval workflows.
- Guided Buying: Directs employees to preferred suppliers.
- Sustainability Filters: Highlights products with Climate Pledge Friendly certifications.
Amazon Business is betting that its scale, infrastructure, and tailored features can draw in businesses in Australia still relying on phone, fax, and fragmented supplier networks, Amazon says.
