Walmart Klarna’s largest retail customer in Canada, bringing its BNPL options to hundreds of stores

Walmart Canada will accept Klarna for payments at more than 400 stores, the retailer and flexible payments vendor announced on Aug. 25.

The move, which brings Klarna’s buy now, pay later (BNPL) and other options to Walmart Canada shoppers, gives Klarna its largest retail presence in the country.

Klarna will be an option for shoppers on walmart.ca, as well as the Walmart Canada mobile app. In addition, physical stores will accept Klarna payment options at checkout via QR code.

Klarna provides payment processing services to at least one other merchant in the Top 2000. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of North America’s online retailers by web sales. It also provides customer service software and support to five retailers in the Top 2000.

Digital Commerce 360’s 2025 edition of the Top 1000 Report found that at least more than half (51.3%) of online retailers in the Top 1000 accepted some form of BNPL option at checkout.

Where Walmart Canada will accept Klarna for payments

Klarna provides a BNPL solution that Walmart Canada customers can use on the retailer’s ecommerce site and app. In stores, shoppers will be able to use Klarna options such as Pay in Full and Pay in 4, which splits purchases across four installments for those exceeding CA$50.

“At Walmart Canada, we strive to be Canada’s most trusted omnichannel retailer, and that means catering to our customers’ needs — no matter how they choose to shop with us,” said Joseph Godsey, chief growth officer at Walmart Canada. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to enhance the shopping experience and provide more flexibility and convenience for our customers.”

Godsey cited Klarna and BNPL as options that would further those ambitions.

“Introducing BNPL options, powered by Klarna, across our stores allows us to provide even more payment choice to the 1.5 million customers we have the opportunity to serve each day,” he stated.

Klarna’s expanding presence in Canada

“As Klarna continues to bridge digital and physical retail, we’re proud to collaborate with Walmart Canada to bring smarter, more flexible ways to pay to millions of shoppers,” said David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna. “This milestone reflects our ambition to be the everyday spending partner for consumers — everywhere and for everything.”

Klarna’s own data shows that it has been used in at least 13.7 million in-store transactions to date since the service launched in 2020. In addition, it already counts individual Canadian users, who number in the millions. The company made headlines in March when it began working with DoorDash to provide payment options for orders through that platform. The Sweden-based company has reportedly been exploring plans to go public in the United States in September at a valuation of as much as $14 billion, according to Reuters.

“We’re committed to offering payment options that are transparent and empower smart and responsible spending,” Sykes stated.
