Intershop Communications AG said CEO Markus Klahn is stepping down, as the German ecommerce software provider contends with falling sales and a weaker full-year forecast.
The leadership change comes after a difficult first half. Intershop reported revenue of €17.2 million ($18.9 million). That’s down from €19.0 million ($20.9 million) a year earlier, as sluggish new-customer activity weighed on results. Cloud sales declined 1% to €10.1 million ($11.1 million). Meanwhile, incoming cloud orders fell 41% to €6.7 million ($7.4 million). Service revenue dropped 27% to €3.7 million ($4.1 million), and license and maintenance revenue slipped 8% to €3.4 million ($3.7 million).
The company’s net loss increased to €1.1 million ($1.2 million). In July, Intershop cut its 2025 forecast, now expecting revenue to contract by 10% to 15% and to post an operating loss in the low single-digit millions of euros.
Why the Intershop CEO is stepping down
Klahn, who joined Intershop in 2018 and became CEO in 2021, is leaving for personal reasons. Chief operating officer Markus Dränert, who has overseen the company’s cloud and artificial intelligence initiatives since joining last year, will take over as chief executive.
Board chairman Frank Fischer credited Klahn with leading Intershop’s shift to cloud services but said Dränert is well-placed to accelerate its move into artificial intelligence.
“He has many years of experience in the software industry and transformation projects,” Fischer said.
Dränert said he plans to maintain the company’s focus on cloud expansion and AI despite what he called a “challenging market phase.”
Founded in 1992 and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Intershop builds ecommerce platforms for manufacturers and wholesalers worldwide.
