Perplexity is making a new push into agentic commerce, adding and expanding access to ecommerce features within its Comet web browser for the holiday season.
In addition to making features from Perplexity’s subscription-tied Buy With Pro checkout experience available to U.S.-based Comet users for free, the company announced that it would begin launching more features as soon as Nov. 24, according to plans the company shared with Digital Commerce 360.
These new features include commerce-related responses to natural language prompts, as well as personalized search results, product cards and a checkout experience powered by PayPal’s agentic commerce technology.
How does Perplexity’s agentic commerce experience work?
Perplexity’s agentic commerce refresh, which follows the rollouts of competing artificial intelligence (AI) shopping and agentic checkout experiences from Google and ChatGPT, will build on Perplexity’s existing offerings, which were previously only available to the AI search platform’s Pro and Max subscribers.
Going forward, Buy with Pro functionality, which debuted in 2024 for paid tiers, will be open to all Perplexity users. The company debuted Buy with Pro ahead of Thanksgiving one year ago alongside its merchant program, which offered retailers benefits such as increased likelihood of having products recommended, payment integrations for single-click checkout and free access to Perplexity’s API.
According to Perplexity, the features will go live first for all U.S. users during the week of Thanksgiving on its desktop app and website, followed by Perplexity’s iOS app and Comet in the weeks that follow.
The relaunch will coincide with PayPal’s own promotion, from Black Friday on Nov. 28 through Cyber Monday on Dec. 1. PayPal will try to incentivize purchases through its Instant Buy merchants with one-time holiday cashback offers. PayPal currently counts “hundreds” of merchants among its participants.
Tech companies using agentic commerce for holiday sales
Perplexity, OpenAI and Google will be just a few of the tech companies pushing agentic commerce solutions for the 2025 holiday season. In addition to PayPal, OpenAI, Google, Visa and Mastercard have all launched agentic payments solutions, hoping to cement their participation in an evolving ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Perplexity has accused Amazon of “bullying” in a legal dispute over how Perplexity’s Comet browser should be allowed to interact with Amazon’s website. Amazon has been adding its own agentic commerce features to its own virtual assistant, where it has created a package called Alexa+.
