Costco takes Instacart partnership to Europe, starting with France and Spain

Costco Wholesale and Instacart have announced that they are expanding their partnership into Europe.

Prior to the announcement, the companies solely worked together on same-day delivery in North America. As of Jan. 30, Costco and Instacart have launched same-day delivery websites in France and Spain. Instacart’s Storefront Pro commerce platform and fulfillment solutions services will power the sites, the companies said.

Costco members in France and Spain can now shop online and receive delivery through Costco’s websites in each country using sameday.costco.fr and sameday.costco.es, respectively.

“Online ordering and delivery gives members in France and Spain greater flexibility in how they shop Costco’s assortment and build on the services we already offer,” said Pierre Riel, executive vice president of Costco Wholesale International Division, in a statement. “It’s another step in making Costco easier to access while continuing to deliver the value, quality, and service our members expect.”

Costco is No. 7 in the Top 2000 Database. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the largest online retailers in North America by their annual ecommerce sales. It’s also the fourth-largest Mass Merchant in the database.

How Costco is expanding same-day delivery through Instacart

The initial rollout includes delivery from all Costco locations in France and Spain.

Costco members in both countries can place orders directly through the retailer’s websites. The companies then fulfill and deliver from the store to consumers’ doors.

“To provide a seamless, high-quality experience for Costco members, Instacart is partnering with European-partner companies in each country at launch for the picking, packing and delivery of orders,” the companies said in their announcement. “Members will also be able to enjoy same-as-in-store pricing, giving them access to the same value they expect in-store, with a flat service fee per order.”

Chris Rogers, Instacart’s CEO, said his company is “incredibly proud” to expand its relationship with Costco into Europe.

“Powering Costco’s online ordering and delivery program in France and Spain is a testament to the strength of our enterprise e-commerce technology suite, and allows Costco to launch delivery in a way that’s scalable, and built around their members,” he said in a released statement. “For Costco, this unlocks a new level of access and convenience for members, and for Instacart, this marks a new chapter as we bring our over 13 years of grocery industry expertise to more global markets.”

Recent Instacart expansions

In early November, grocery chain operator Kroger announced its expanded relationship with Instacart. The retailer said the expansion “reaffirms” Instacart as its “primary delivery fulfillment partner” for consumers using Kroger.com and its mobile app.

Kroger has since announced updates to its ecommerce plan that it said it expects to improve operating profit by about $400 million in 2026, in part by targeting fulfillment efficiency. That included expanding its order-fulfillment relationships with DoorDash and Uber Eats as well. By the end of the year, Kroger’s exclusivity terms had ended with warehouse technology provider Ocado Group.

In addition to expanding its relationship with Kroger, Instacart has also deputed a shopping app inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The integration makes Instacart the first grocery partner — and the first app overall — to support end-to-end shopping with Instant Checkout inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT, according to dual announcements from the companies. It went live in December.
