The Home Depot has announced that Ted Decker, its chair, president and CEO, will take a temporary medical leave of absence.
In a press release posted to its website, the company said it expects Decker to return “within the next few months.” It did not specify further.
Decker has been with Home Depot since February 2000. His role as Home Depot’s president and CEO began in March 2022. Prior to that, he has most recently served as:
- chief operating officer
- executive vice president of merchandising
- senior vice president of retail finance
- senior vice president of strategic business development

Who will run Home Depot amid CEO’s medical leave?
Home Depot announced that its board of directors has chosen two long-time executives to fill in for Decker, “in alignment with” his recommendation. Those executives are Ann-Marie Campbell (senior executive vice president) and Richard McPhail (executive vice president and chief financial officer).
Together, the two executives will oversee the CEO’s operations during his absence, Home Depot said.
Campbell will oversee Home Depot’s day-to-day operations, according to the company. McPhail will oversee its financial management and Pro subsidiaries.
In recent months, Home Depot has expanded delivery for overseas military families and added rewards for Pro Xtra customers, though it has also had to address cost changes related to tariffs and oil prices. In the meantime, it also pooled its AI tools for Pro customers into a unified workspace and completed its acquisition, via subsidiary SRS, of Mingledorff’s. The moves all underscore dynamics the company manages for its consumer and pro lines of business.
Greg Brenneman, an independent director, will chair the board during Decker’s leave.
“The Home Depot has the best management team in retail,” Brenneman said in a statement. “Both Ann-Marie and Richard are strong, seasoned executives who have worked together for more than 20 years. We are confident in Ann-Marie’s and Richard’s ability to lead the company during this time, and we look forward to Ted’s return.”
