Amazon further expands same-day grocery delivery

Building on an August expansion to offer same-day grocery delivery, Amazon announced it has more than doubled its reach in four months.

In August, Amazon announced it could reach 1,000 cities and towns with same-day grocery delivery. That itself was part of Amazon’s goal to better reach rural areas in the United States. It said in June that its plans include reaching more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities in the U.S. with same-day and next-day delivery.

As of Dec. 10, Amazon said it has achieved a new milestone of reaching 2,300 cities and towns. That puts it at more than halfway to its launch goal. It also satisfies Amazon’s stated goal from August: to expand same-day grocery delivery to more than 2,300 areas in the U.S. by the end of 2025.

Amazon ranks No. 1 in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 2000 Database. The database is how Digital Commerce 360 tracks the largest North American online retailers by their annual ecommerce sales.

Amazon is also No. 3 in Digital Commerce 360’s Global Online Marketplaces Database. That database ranks the 100 largest such marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value (GMV).

Context of Amazon’s expanding same-day grocery delivery reach

Amazon said its online sales of perishable groceries have grown 30 times since January as more of its customers use its same-day delivery option for those orders.

“Perhaps most telling is the shift in shopping patterns: customers who add fresh groceries to their Same-Day Delivery orders shop about twice as often as those who don’t,” according to an Amazon blog post.

The post quotes Doug Herrinton, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, praising the retailer’s “selection, value, and convenience of same-day delivery.”

“We’re seeing customers combine their fresh grocery orders with their regular Amazon purchases, like electronics, gifts, clothes, and household essentials, in ways that make their lives easier and save them valuable time,” he said.

Amazon’s expansion into same-day grocery delivery comes as some of its major domestic competitors are growing their reach. Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and Aldi each have scaled up their delivery time and capacity. In addition to improvements in the retailers’ own fulfillment networks, Kroger, Albertsons and Aldi are also partnering with third-party delivery platforms such as InstacartDoorDash and Uber Eats.

Additionally, Walmart has partnered with Pinterest to let users add recipe-associated ingredients directly to the retailer’s digital shopping carts from within the social media platform.
