Bluon launches PartsConnect tool for HVAC contractors

Bluon is bringing digital commerce directly into the repair workflow for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) contractors.

The company provides software and equipment data for HVAC technicians. Bluon launched a feature on April 13 called PartsConnect. It said the new tool helps technicians identify compatible replacement parts, see which local distributors have them in stock and buy them directly through Bluon’s app.

The idea is to eliminate a familiar pain point. For many contractors, parts sourcing still involves flipping through manuals, checking supplier catalogs or calling local distributors. Technicians also face discontinued parts, unclear substitutes and the need to rely on distributor staff to confirm compatibility.

Bluon said it designed PartsConnect to address those frustrations.

“Our customers have been asking for this feature for years,” said Peter Capuciati, CEO, in a statement.

“Identifying compatible replacement part options is hard enough, but trying to determine if a local distributor carries any of those compatible options has historically been a massive friction point for HVAC shops,” he said. “We believe we have finally cracked the code to this enormous challenge.”

How Bluon’s data and AI power PartsConnect

PartsConnect builds on the data and diagnostic tools Bluon has been developing for years.

The Irvine, California-based company provides equipment data and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven troubleshooting tools for contractors. Over time, Bluon has assembled a large database of HVAC-R equipment manuals, specifications and parts lists. Today, that database covers more than 30 million equipment models across more than 240 manufacturers.

That data also helps power Bluon’s AI platform, which includes a chat-style interface that helps technicians troubleshoot problems in the field.

Now, the company is extending that foundation into commerce.

With PartsConnect, a technician scans or enters a model number from a malfunctioning unit. Bluon then uses its equipment database and cross-reference data to identify compatible parts. From there, the app shows which nearby distributors have the parts in stock. Contractors can also purchase the components directly through the platform.

The tool is available through Bluon’s mobile app as well as integrations with field service management (FSM) software.

“Enabling contractors to go straight from a scan of a unique model number being worked on to instantly see what compatible parts are sold by their local distributors is a game-changer for HVAC,” Capuciati said. “PartsConnect is a huge step forward in the pursuit of helping contractors and their technicians making each job as profitable as possible.”

Why repairs are rising and parts sourcing matters more

The launch also comes as HVAC contractors handle more repair and retrofit jobs rather than full equipment replacements.

In a recent industry analysis published in Contracting Business, Capuciati wrote that new equipment sales for most major manufacturers fell between 20% and 40% in 2025 compared with 2024. Installation volumes declined for several consecutive quarters, he wrote, while demand for parts and repairs continued to grow.

Capuciati attributed the shift, in part, to rising replacement costs.

“Contractors in every part of the country are reporting the same thing: Sticker shock, increased regulatory complexity, and higher financing costs have combined to push homeowners toward repairing their old units rather than replacing them with new ones,” he wrote. “The average American household simply can’t afford it.”

For contractors, that shift is also changing the economics of service work.

New HVAC equipment costing up to $20,000 often cannot compete with a $500 to $1,500 repair or a roughly $3,500 retrofit, Capuciati wrote in the analysis. Repair and retrofit jobs can often carry higher margins than new installations, he noted.

But those margins depend heavily on speed. The faster technicians can identify compatible parts and source them locally, the faster they can complete the job and move on to the next one.

That is where tools like PartsConnect could help, Capuciati suggested. In an interview with Contracting Business, he said PartsConnect could deliver “a massive productivity gain for the industry and something we have been working on for quite some time.”

How AI tools could help address the technician shortage

Bluon’s AI efforts also intersect with a broader challenge facing the HVAC industry: a growing shortage of skilled technicians.

As experienced workers retire, contractors are increasingly relying on newer technicians who have less hands-on experience diagnosing older equipment, Capuciati wrote in Contracting Business. At the same time, the industry is not replacing retiring workers quickly enough, he said.

“Technicians no longer have years of mentorship available,” Capuciati wrote. “AI-driven diagnostic guidance, based on real support calls and equipment failures, gives techs confidence and accelerates skill formation.”

In 2023, Bluon introduced MasterMechanic, an AI assistant it designed to help technicians diagnose equipment issues using natural-language questions.

Unlike general-purpose AI systems trained on broad internet data, Bluon said MasterMechanic draws on its proprietary HVAC dataset. This includes roughly 50,000 real-world troubleshooting scenarios and millions of equipment documents.

Bluon has also expanded partnerships with field service software providers including ServiceTitan, BuildOps and HouseCall Pro, embedding its equipment data and AI tools into the systems contractors already use to manage jobs.

More recently, the company partnered with Helios HVACR Services to deploy its diagnostics and equipment intelligence platform across commercial service operations in more than 40 states.
