Walmart begins accepting CareCredit cards for health and wellness purchases

Walmart and Synchrony expanded the scope of their work together, opening up acceptance of Synchrony’s CareCredit cards for new health and wellness products.

The companies noted in an April 7 announcement that credit cards issued through the CareCredit program could be used on a variety of new products at Walmart.com, as well as all Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. going forward.

Walmart is No. 2 in the Top 2000. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of North America’s online retailers by their annual ecommerce sales.

It is also No. 8 in the Global Online Marketplaces. That database ranks the top such marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value (GMV).

When Walmart will accept Synchrony’s CareCredit cards

Synchrony noted in its announcement that in addition to health and wellness purchases that already qualified for CareCredit purchases, cardholders would also be able to buy additional items in stores and on Walmart’s website. Qualifying product categories include:

  • Medical supplies and equipment (such as wheelchairs, crutches and walking canes)
  • Fitness products (treadmills, stationary bikes and weights)
  • Sleep essentials (mattresses, pillows and sheets)
  • Pet care (pet health supplies, specialized food, flea and tick medications, etc.)

“The healthcare journey extends far beyond the doctor’s office, and we’re committed to connecting consumers with credit options so they can access health and wellness products and services at their local retailer and during the moments that matter most,” said Beto Casellas, executive vice president and CEO of health and wellness at Synchrony. “Expanding our relationship with a trusted retailer like Walmart is a pivotal step in giving millions of families the flexibility and convenience to pay for their wellness needs where they shop.”

What is the CareCredit program?

Synchrony claims that CareCredit currently has about 12 million cardholders in the U.S. Around 290,000 health and wellness providers accept the cards as a form of payment, including both health-focused retailers and traditional retailers that sell qualifying products. CareCredit also lists Albertsons, LensCrafters and Walgreens among retailers that accept its cards.

In addition to the new qualifying products, Walmart and Synchrony’s expanded collaboration encompasses options on Walmart.com with omnichannel fulfillment offerings such as home delivery and in-store pickup.

The card is intended to assist with financing and flexible payment terms for health-related consumer needs. The program promotes special financing options when the card is used on purchases of $200 or more.
